Intense devotion to serving others led Clara Barton to form the American Red Cross in l881. Nurses have been a cornerstone of service as early as the Spanish American War. During World War I and World War II, Red Cross was responsible for the recruitment of nurses for the Army and Navy. In World War I, 20,000 nurses served and 77,800 in World War II.
